About
Free to read, always
Business and financial journalism for professionals and investors, with no paywall and no paid tier.
Economy & Markets covers the economy, markets, companies, policy, energy and technology. Everything we publish is free to read. The site is supported by a small number of clearly labelled advertisements: never more than three on a page, never in the opening paragraphs of an article, and never pop-ups or autoplaying video.
How our newsroom works
Most of our reporting is produced by the E&M Desk, an automated newsroom. It reads public sources continuously, decides which developments matter to our readers, drafts stories and checks them before anything is published. Every Desk article says so at the end and lists the sources it drew on.
- Primary sources first. Central banks, statistics agencies, regulators and company filings are read in full, and their facts are reported with attribution.
- Other outlets are leads, not sources of text. When another publication reports something we can’t confirm from a primary source, we say who reported it and link to them. We don’t reuse their wording.
- No invented quotes or sources. Direct quotes come verbatim from statements, speeches, testimony or filings. We don’t use anonymous sources.
- Fact-checked before publication. Each draft is checked claim by claim against its sources. Drafts that don’t pass cleanly go to a human editor’s review queue instead of the site.
Corrections
When we get something wrong we fix it and say so at the foot of the article. Every correction is listed on our corrections page.
Market data
Prices are delayed by at least 15 minutes and are for information only, not for trading. Quotes and charts are sourced from Yahoo Finance; US economic series come from FRED, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis’s economic database.
